An interview is a thing where someone asks you questions and then shares your answers with people who are interested in the subject you’re talking about. This interview is about me being an artist. It was done for HeART of the Horse which is a very special SAFE event that is coming soon.

"Flowers to Eat" by Honeycutt

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AN ARTIST?

I’ve been an artist ever since I was a tiny foal, but it was not until May of this year that I was finally given a platform from which to express myself. At first, I could just share my thoughts from time to time on the SAFE website, then I got a Facebook page for my poems. At the suggestion of one of my good friends, I created and published a book called Poem Book which is filled with many pictures of me and poems that tell about the pictures. I decided to try my nose at painting and began creating pieces in tempura poster paint on canvas, one of which I donated to the SAFE auction so it could be traded for dollars to help the SAFE horses.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?

I am very interested in the world around me and I have many questions, such as “When is breakfast coming?” As a horse, I have a lot of free time to think about these sorts of questions and so it was only natural that my thoughts and feelings about breakfast and other meals would begin to manifest themselves in art.

TELL US ABOUT THE SUBJECTS OF YOUR ART

I have two paintings that I am very proud of. The first painting was a picture from in my head of the field at my house called “Flowers To Eat”. My second painting was a thing called a portrait, do you know that thing? It is called “Painter Lady Please Paint Me” and it is a picture of my friend Maeve Harris.

WHO IS/ARE YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST(S)?

I am very inspired by the work of the great racemare Zenyatta, who retired from racing to devote herself full time to painting. Many people say that my work is derivative of hers, but I feel that my paintings more closely resemble those of Smarty Jones or even Point Given. I may just be saying that because Zenyatta’s a girl though.

WHAT DO YOU THINK PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?

Even though I am a very friendly horse in writing, in real life I am actually very scared of peoples. Something happened to me a long time ago, something so terrible that I can’t even say what it was! I remain very scared and afraid of humans even though every human I meet is very kind and gentle. I may never stop being afraid.

WHY DO YOU SUPPORT HORSE RESCUE?

Because I am a very lucky horse! Other horses are not so lucky. Other horses are pointy and have no food and that is a very bad thing! Horses are very nice people who just want to have hays and tasty, tasty grain, with no yelling or hitting, no pain, and no being scared or alone. I am a lucky horse and I want to help other horses be lucky too. The people at SAFE work very hard to stop horses from having to be afraid, or worry about no food, or be cold or alone. The people at SAFE love horses and they love me most of all. But helping horses costs many many dollars, so I want to do things to get dollars for SAFE so that more horses can be lucky and SAFE peoples can stop being so worried about no dollars.
